The first leg outside the UK

These past few days have been all about getting to the top of Denmark where a ferry awaits, but the journey to get here has been awesome!

The channel tunnel took me under the English Channel for 25km and plonked me out in Calais where I turned left and headed towards the Netherlands to spend the first night. I found a spot near Kinderdijk and explored at sunrise, shooting the 300 year old windmills.

I’d been here one before but it was a totally different time of year, a totally different time of day, and on a motorbike with not a lot of time to spare. It was nice to really get in amongst it and properly explore.

I was gone by 9am and headed towards Germany where I planned to spend the night but in fact only had a quick nap before steaming on further into Denmark. My aim was to smash out as many miles as possible as soon as possible to give myself a break at the other end of the road before boarding the ferry.

I arrived in Denmark and, late at night, checked another UNESCO site off my list (The Moravian Church) but during daylight hours I decided to check out an epic looking lighthouse.

The Rubjerg Knude Fyr was picked up and dragged across the sand to a clear spot because the landscape was consuming it, and here it now stands amongst the sand dunes at the top of a cliff facing the Strait of Denmark. You can climb to the top, if you’re brave enough to set foot on the see-through perforated iron steps!

After this I found a serene beach just outside of Hirtshals named Kjul Strand. You can drive onto the sand, so I did!

This seemed like the perfect spot to watch the sunset, and to line up one of my stickers against the van to make the comparison….

That leaves me with just a little time to get myself and the van ready to board the Smyril Line ferry to Torshavn, Faroe Islands.

See you there!

Much love

Dave
